MAXIMISING PEOPLE PERFORMANCE IN A REMOTE WORLD!
People Performance when Remote Working
Difficulty in participating in virtual meetings, giving and recieving feedback and being expected to be online to 'prove' they are working are just some of the challenges people say they are facing as a result of remote working in the COVID crisis. Those are the findings of a report produced by Hubspot and highlight just some of the challenges facing their leaders and managers. The Remote Working Report says that...
- 43% said they have a harder time participating in meetings when everyone is remote.
- 38% had less meeting exhaustion, despite 30% reporting having 20-40% more meetings compared to before COVID-19
- 29% said it’s harder to give and receive feedback virtually than in person
and the interesting one that show feel people feel 'under pressure' with...
- 55% agreeing or strongly agreeing in feeling that they’re expected to be online to prove they’re working to their manager!
Interestingly, the impact of remote working doesn't seem to be too bad with 51% of people feeling that thier performance is about the same, 31% think it's improved and only 11% think it's declined. Overall, there are lots of very positive things in the report, with some negatives about 'prsessure', having the right resources, mental and physical health and wellbeing, but the key message that I took from it is that EVERYONE REACTS DIFFERENTLY!
The role of the leader is to recognise the feelings and concerns of ALL their individuals on one to one personal basis. Not being there makes it more difficult to do that, and they have to take a proactive and deliberate steps to do this. It starts with asking some questions and here are some to consider

1. HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
Follow this with...
2. HOW ARE YOU REALLY FEELING?
3. HOW CAN I HELP YOU?
4. WHAT ARE LOVING ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE DOING?
5. WHAT ARE YOU NOT LOVING?
6.WHAT MOTIVATES / DEMOTIVATES YOU AROUND HERE?
7.WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK?
8.WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BE AT YOUR VERY BEST?
9.IN WHICH AREAS WOULD YOU LIKE TO GROW AND DEVELOP?
10.WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME AS A LEADER?
Please do not do this as a 'tick box exercise'. Take the time to proactively get to know them, what's making them tick and what's not.
The key is obviously 'TAKE ACTION WITH WHAT YOU HEAR'!
