Fix Your Recruitment Problems With Airfix

Airfix ModelsFinding people that have the aptitude and attitude for your business is always a challenge. They may have the ‘technical skills’ but not necessarily the aptitudes and attitudes that you need. So, how do you find the right people that will fit into your business?

Well, here’s a great example from one of Sheffield’s really forward thinking businesses. PMS Diecasting specialise in the manufacture of high quality zinc diecasts. They are  one of Europe’s leading diecasting manufacturers and pride themselves in the outstanding quality of what they do! So, how do they find the right people who can match and support their high standards? The answer is an Airfix model!

As part of their recruitment process they give people an hour to make a model of a Supermarine Spitfire!

Why on earth would they do that? Well, Managing Director Gordon Panter explained to me that what they are looking for in their new recruits. He told us “We are a small professional team of experts, all specialists in our work, all passionate about doing the best we can”

He said they need:

  • Attention to detail 
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Precision and accuracy
  • Speed and efficiency
  • High level of overall quality

So, the best way to discover whether people have these qualities? Get them to make the model and see if …

  • They can follow a list of instructions
  • They have good hand and eye coordination
  • Their work neat and tidy
  • When working under pressure does their quality or quantity suffer 
  • They have an eye for detail

These are some of the qualities which will help them determine whether people are suited to the day to day requirements expected from PMS whether working with machines, tooling or managing systems within the business.

It’s an innovative approach, but one any business could adopt. We’re not saying that you have got to get people making models (although very excitingly, Andy relived his childhood one weekend with the model that Gordon gave him!).

Your challenge is to..

  • Work out what ‘qualities’ you need from your new recruits
  • Establish what these ‘qualities’ look like
  • Identify how you can get people to demonstrate them!
