Now Listen Here! Are You Communicating Effectively?

19Sep Now Listen Here! Are You Communicating Effectively?

Not ListeningI enjoyed speaking at a Common Purpose Graduate Conference yesterday on effective communication.

Thanks to all those who came along and contributed to the sessions! I hope that you are now busy asking those questions and importantly, LISTENING to the answers!

As promised, you can download the slides here! Feel free to Download and Distribute them – and crucially, DO something with them! (Sorry, the ‘guess the number’ exercise isn’t in there!)

Just to remind you… the 3 key ideas were:

Idea 1: Be Aware!

Effective communicators recognise that communication isn’t just about the words – that’s only 7% of the impact – it’s the tone of voice (38%) and non-verbal communication (55%). Why don’t you find out what other people think about your communication style. If you’re really brave, ask people to give you some feedback on how you could improve the way you communicate with them – whether it’s face to face, on the phone, written or texted!

Idea 2: Ask Questions!

Questions are a great way to find out more, get people’s opinions and ideas, clarify things and check understanding. Open questions in particular can help create conversations and build rapport – unfortunately, although we know this, most of us still ask a lot more closed questions than we think we do. Questions can also demonstrate to people that you’re interested in them. provided, of course that you…..

Idea 3: Listen!

Most of us aren’t as good at listening as we think we are. Concentrate on listening and proactively ‘tuning in’ to what people are saying, and make sure you’re listening for feeling as well as facts – many of us don’t actually do this as well as we think we do.

The video below might just highlight a communication problem that many of us encounter (from both sides!)
